Wrexham 2 Sheffield Utd 3 (Carling Cup)
Normal Wrexham service (as regards the League Cup) was resumed last night, after they were knocked out of the Carling Cup despite having led their Championship opponents twice. This match was another Teletext adventure for me, and after 6 minutes I felt it was almost worth missing out on a night out, as Craig Morgan gave the home side the lead. This self-delusion only lasted a quarter of an hour, before Gray equalised for the Blades. Wrexham regained the lead on the stroke of half-time, however, through Chris Llewellyn. Just as I was starting to check other results to see who we might be playing in the next round, Jagielka leveled things again, ten minutes after the break. And while I was pondering the possibility of making it over to Sheffield to watch the replay in person, Gray scored again to put the visitors 3-2 up. Oh well, there's always the FA Cup. But I'll never get last night back.
With a bit of luck, Wrexham can get revenge on Sheffield with a victory on Saturday, when Sheffield Wednesday come to town. Paul Sturrock is likely to have been announced as Chris Turner's replacement at Hillsborough by then, which might give Wednesday a boost they badly need, given recent form. On paper, this should be an easier match than last nights, but with Armstrong still suspended, Wrexham may be reliant on those returning from injury in order to put out a strong side.
