Wrexham led after 15 minutes, when Dennis Lawrence headed in from a Darren Ferguson free-kick, but Walsall levelled with quarter of an hour to go, through a Julian Bennet header. Chris Armstrong started against the struggling Saddlers, but was unable to produce a goal.
