Best / Worst

This week saw Mickey Thomas named in FourFourTwo magazine as the best player ever to
wear a Wrexham shirt, and Ian Rush as the worst. Personally, I think Rush has been treated a
little harshly due to his Chester connection, but for a striker of his class, failing to score at all
for Wrexham makes its own argument, He was pretty poor by the time he made it to the
Racecourse, and probably wouldn't have got in the team had it not been for the fact that he
was Ian Rush.
Mickey has probably been chosen primarily for scoring the most famous goal in Wrexham
history, against Arsenal in 1992. But he deserves some recognition for his service to the club
during two spells at the Racecourse, and I don't just mean passing Youth Team players dodgy
tenners.
My own personal choice for the worst ever Wrexham player is perhaps a little unfair, but - I
have recently discovered - shared by Sky Sports' Stat Spouter himself, Jeff Stelling, in his book
England's Worst Footballers. Whilst my opinion of Mark Cartwright is only based on a couple of
games, and I'm probably judging him too harshly by comparing him with his outstanding
predeccessor Andy Marriott, I can't help but feel vindicated by Jeff's selection.
As for the best ever? Well, I don't think I've been around long enough to judge fairly (I don't
remember much of the 1970's - for example - on account of not having been born), Wrexham
fans have seen some great players in recent years - Not least Carlos Edwards and Juan 'Two-
Three-Four-Five' Ugarte.

Also on the nostalgia front, Football Focus’ Cult Heroes Series reaches Wrexham today. The
selected three players to vote for (by texting the player's SURNAME to 81111) are Mickey
Thomas, Joey Jones and Gary Bennett.
I won’t be updating this page until Monday now, as I’m starting the trip down to Cardiff. I’m
looking forward to not worrying about three points/relegation/The MK Dons, but I can’t shift
the feeling that we won’t be the favourites on Sunday.

Carlos Edwards and Craig Morgan are unlikely to feature, and Mark Jones’ fitness is still
uncertain. Andy Dibble, Brian Carey and Jim Whitley are all almost certain to miss out.
